Sip Don’t Mix

Sip Don’t Mix

Ron Santiago De Cuba 12

If your only experience of rum involves cola, it is worth pouring one neat. Aged rum has a lot in common with whisky and cognac: long maturation in oak, careful blending, and strong regional character that you can taste once the mixer is out of the way.

These ten bottles are chosen for sipping. They range from smooth, aged blends to cask-strength Barbados rum, wild Jamaican pot still and a Haitian cane spirit that is nothing like a typical rum. If you drink whisky or cognac and want a way into rum, this is a good place to start.

How to sip rum neat

Use a tulip-shaped glass if you have one, or a small whisky glass. It concentrates the aroma.

Try it neat first, then add a few drops of water or a single large ice cube.

Give it a few minutes. Most of these open up in the glass.

For the higher-strength bottles (Foursquare ECS, Worthy Park and Clairin), go slowly and use water.

The list

1. Black Tot Finest Caribbean Rum

Barbados, Jamaica and Guyana · 46.2% ABV

A blend of rums from three of the great Caribbean traditions: Guyanese rum (including pot and column still styles), Barbadian rum and a smaller share of Jamaican pot still rum. It is bottled at a gently higher strength of 46.2%. Expect espresso, treacle and spiced cake on the nose, tropical fruit and baked banana on the palate, and a dry, cocoa-led finish.

2. El Dorado 15 Year Old

Guyana · 43% ABV

From Demerara Distillers in Guyana, this is a blend of aged rums, including rums from the distillery’s historic wooden pot stills. It is a dark, rich, old-school Demerara style that sits well alongside a good single malt, and it has long been one of the benchmark aged rums.

3. The Real McCoy 14 Year Old Limited Edition Dark Rum

Barbados · 46% ABV

This is a 14 year old Foursquare rum bottled as a limited edition for The Real McCoy range, made from a blend of copper column and pot still rums, and aged in ex-bourbon barrels.

4. Hampden Estate 8 Year Old

Jamaica · 46% ABV

Hampden is famous for high-ester, pot still rum, and this eight-year-old is a full-bodied example. The nose and palate run to fresh mango, vanilla ice cream with toffee sauce, ripe banana and orange oil, with oak spice, cedar, cinnamon and ginger underneath. If you want to find out what Jamaican funk is about, start here.

5. Mount Gay XO Triple Cask Blend

Barbados · 43% ABV

A blend of Barbadian rums matured in three different types of cask. It is a rounded, polished style that is easy to enjoy neat, and a good step up from Mount Gay Eclipse if you like that house style.

6. Rhum J.M Fumee Volcanique Rhum Agricole

Martinique · 49% ABV

Rhum agricole is made from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses, and J.M is one of the great names in Martinique. Under the island’s AOC rules, XO means at least six years in oak. It has a grassier, more herbal and peppery character than molasses rum, and it is a great option for anyone who likes a drier, more savoury drink.

Rhum J.M Fumee Volcanique, gets its name from the volcanic soil in which all its sugar cane is grown on the Habitation Bellevue estate, right above the distillery.

7. Ron Santiago de Cuba 12 Year Old

Cuba · 40% ABV

Made in Santiago de Cuba, the historic home of Cuban rum in the east of the island. A twelve-year-old Cuban rum is a smoother, lighter-bodied style than the Jamaican and Demerara rums above, and it is a good choice for anyone who enjoys a more delicate sipper.

8. Worthy Park Single Estate Reserve

Jamaica · 45% ABV

Worthy Park is a working sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica’s Saint Catherine parish, and this rum is made on a pot still from the estate’s own cane. It is a good alternative to Hampden if you want pot still character in a slightly more polished, approachable style.

9. Clairin Vaval 2022 Rhum Agricole

Haiti · 53.3% ABV

Clairin is the traditional spirit of Haiti, made in small village distilleries from sugarcane juice with natural fermentation and bottled unaged. It tastes closer to fresh cane and wild herbs than to anything you would call a typical rum, and it is a fascinating bottle for anyone curious about where Haitian rum began. The 2022 edition of Clairin Vaval comes from Haiti’s Arawaks distillery. It is distilled from sugar cane juice and spontaneously fermented with natural and ambient yeasts. Not for the faint-hearted, but rewarding.

10. Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva

Venezuela · 40% ABV

A blend of rums aged for up to twelve years. It is the sweetest style on this list, with a rich, dessert-like profile that suits people moving over from liqueurs or sweeter spirits, and it is one of the most approachable aged rums around.
